Raz Mesinai was born in Jerusalem in 1973 and raised in New York City. A prolific composer, producer, visual artist and multi instrumentalist, Mesinai has released over a dozen critically acclaimed albums, including under the monikers Badawi, Ladyman and Sub Dub.
Mesinai has performed as a solo percussionist, specializing in frame drum and piano, as a DJ and with live electronics worldwide, most recently in the UAE at the Sharjah Art Foundation with Tarek Atoui, and at the Unit Club, Tokyo. His instrumental compositions have been performed by ensembles including the Kronos Quartet and Ethel, and at such venues as Lincoln Center, Unsound Festival, Etna Fest and Carnegie Hall.
Mesinai’s fiction and criticism have been published by online magazines including Souciant and Hungry Ghost. Mesinai is also an educator, lecturing on sound design, music for film, electronic-music and new media at various institutions including University of California at San Diego, the Conservatory of Denmark, the New School, Dub Spot & New York University.
In 2011 Mesinai began developing an innovative graphic-novel iPad app, The Heretic Of Ether, which integrates still and moving image with an interactive score featuring music and narration by many collaborators, including contemporary dub notables such as Kode9, Lustmord, Mary Anne Hobbs, The Space Ape and many others. His long time-interest in graphic novels and comics, which spurred him to penn a short story that was published by Marvel Comics back in 1993, has re-emerged as a integral part of his current artistic practice since creating a graphic novel insert for Kode9′s Black Sun release in 2011.
