Born in Bakersfield, California, Dickerson took his name from the 1980′s Korg keyboard. The name Mono/Poly symbolizes the artist’s multi-faceted audio production and unparalleled sound. Charles’ interest in music composition flourished as a kid in the mid-90′s. His father had a small studio setup where Charles got his hands on some of his first synthesizers. The Roland Juno keyboard was what really caught his interest. As he got older, Charles became curious on how electronic music was made. He began making his earliest music using a simple freeware program, which he found on the internet, called Taureg. A multi-disciplined, open-minded musician since the tender age of 12, Mono/Poly galvanized himself into the burgeoning electronic music scene in 1997 and began to hone his skills on the turntables. Since that day, the passion he has for the genre has only increased, as the medium allows him to experience and experiment as both an artist and a musician. In 2006, he hooked up with friends Ben, Steve, and Francois to throw increasingly popular monthly nights, and followed with his own production company (GLUCOSAMIX) along with three years at Horizon Summer Music Fest. Since then, he has shared decks with the likes of Alexi Delano, Alex Smoke, Simon Baker, Appendic’s Shuffle, Monoblock, Seth Troxier, Pheek, Mateo Murphy, and Guillaume Coûtu-Dumont at some of Montreal’s most famous venues, (Stereo, SAT, Circus, Living, Academy, Terrasse Bonsecour, Pearl Club, L’Apartement) but his most acclaimed performance to date remains his infamous set at Piknic Electronic. His first record was a 7″ vinyl released on Circulations Records on November 2008. Mono/Poly released his first full-length record on Tasteful Licks Records, entitled Paramatma, on May 25th, 2010. The following year, Mono/Poly finished his first EP for Brainfeeder entitled Manifestations, which was released on April 5th, 2011. Manifestations is best described as a funky and diverse, sonic collection, as you would expect from anyone on the Brainfeeder roster. A well-paced work, the EP’s momentum grows and then contorts into other dimensions, balancing powerful rhythms and a beautiful depth for a holistically moving experience. Manifestations has seven tracks, each with a very different tone. From the warm, opening haze of the title tune, to the complete crashing madness of Punch The Troll In The Neck, Mono/Poly has cultivated a choice, sonic garden to explore. The shifty beats of Glow are straight off the streets of Los Angeles, while the stakeout sounds of Toe Jam descend into the groove with fresh urgency. Forest Dark has a bipolar personality altogether, with a funky industrial grind that flips over headfirst into the ripples of a peaceful pond. A strong debut on the Brainfeeder label for Mono/Poly, Manifestations is a release whose many waxy layers are peeled away, one at a time, to reveal a glowing core of true talent and innovative sound design. Anyone who’s heard Mono/Poly’s sound would probably tell you he’s a force to be reckoned with on the dance-floors, armed with a sonic arc, spanning from techno, tech-house, and minimal, influenced by the likes of Adam Bayer, Paul Ritch, Barem, Dubfire, Hawtin, and Delano. Guard your grill and make way for Mono/Poly. + Book This Artist |
